Consumption of fish oil combined with weight training could help turn back the clock for ageing human muscle, according to a study presented on Wednesday at the British Science Festival.
The idea will be tested in a larger trial during the next three years.
In a pilot study by the University of Aberdeen, researchers compared the muscle strength of 14 women over the age of 65. The results suggest that after 12 weeks of resistance exercise training, those taking fish oil improved muscle strength by 20 per cent compared with an 11 per cent increase in the placebo group.
