The US wanted to help the United Nations achieve its “truly noble goals”, said Donald Trump, presenting himself as a champion of the multilateral institution he had labelled an inefficient talking shop.
“In recent years the UN has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement,” the US president said in a short, scripted speech at the body’s headquarters.
“Make the United Nations great,” he said later in an echo of the campaign slogan that had brought him to victory as president. The UN, he said, had “tremendous potential”.
