US vice-president Mike Pence has announced that Turkey had agreed to halt its week-old military incursion in Syria, with an initial five-day suspension to be followed by a permanent ceasefire.
“Millions of lives will be saved!” Donald Trump tweeted. The US vice-president said the Trump administration would not impose any more sanctions on Turkey, and that it would remove recently imposed sanctions once the ceasefire was in place.
“Thank you to @RTErdogan,” Mr Trump wrote on Twitter.
