US President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that a trade deal with Beijing is “coming along nicely” but warned that he would not lift tariffs on Chinese goods until he is sure the country is abiding by the terms of the potential agreement.
“We’re not talking about removing them, we’re talking about leaving them for a substantial period of time, because we have to make sure that if we do the deal with China that China lives by the deal,” Mr Trump said, according to Reuters. “They’ve had a lot of problems living by certain deals.”
The comments come as US trade negotiators prepare to visit Beijing next week in a bid to resolve the remaining sticking points in talks to end the trade war with China.
