Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich has become an Israeli citizen after falling into UK visa limbo as tension worsens between Moscow and the west, two people familiar with the matter said.
Mr Abramovich, who is Jewish, received citizenship yesterday, according to an official from Israel’s immigration and absorption ministry, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
A Russian oligarch close to Mr Abramovich said he travelled to Israel after the UK asked him to undergo new, extensive checks requiring him to prove the origins of his wealth, which Russia’s edition of Forbes estimates at $11.5bn.
