Nearly 150 people have been killed in an attack by Islamist militants on a Kenyan university near the border with Somalia, officials said on Thursday.
The attack by al-Shabaab gunmen on a college campus in the town of Garissa claimed 147 lives, as well as those of four attackers. The seige was declared over on Thursday evening.
Most of those killed were students but the dead included two police officers, one soldier and two watchmen, officials said. The death toll was by far the highest in a single attack by al-Shabaab, an Islamic extremist group from neighboring Somalia, on Kenyan soil.
