US Treasury secretary Jack Lew is expected to press fellow finance ministers to honour a pledge to stimulate growth when they meet in Istanbul on Monday.
The push, due at a two-day gathering of finance ministers from the Group of 20 leading economies, comes amid fears that the US is one of a few bright spots in the global economy and that its recovery is threatened by persistently low growth in Europe and Japan and a slowing China.
Globally, growth remains too “weak and uneven”, a senior US Treasury official said before the meeting and Mr Lew “will emphasise that the world fundamentally needs more demand”.
