Fifa was plunged into fresh controversy after the man chosen to probe corruption allegations over the 2022 World Cup bidding process accused football’s governing body of misrepresenting his findings.
Fifa announced it was keeping faith with Qatar as host for the 2022 competition after concluding that any improper behaviour in the bidding process for the tournament was “of very limited scope”.
Hans-Joachim Eckert, chairman of the adjudicatory chamber of Fifa’s ethics committee, concluded that there was no reason to reopen the bidding process for the 2018 tournament, awarded to Russia, and the 2022 World Cup.
