Police have detained nine protesters who joined a demonstration in Guangzhou on Tuesday against a petrochemical plant in another city in Guangdong province.
Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Guangzhou, the provincial capital, on Tuesday to support residents of Maoming city where authorities intend to build a plant to manufacture the toxic chemical paraxylene (PX).
One of the organisers of the Guangzhou protest who gave his surname as Dai told the Financial Times that police had detained nine demonstrators and brought them back to Maoming where they lived before moving to Guangzhou for work. He said lawyers and family members were not being allowed to see the detained protesters.
