China has expelled an American journalist for breaking unspecified media laws, the first such action by the communist government in more than a decade.
Chinese authorities refused to renew accreditation for Melissa Chan, a US citizen who has been Al Jazeera English’s sole China correspondent since 2007. Her expulsion has also lead to the closure of the broadcaster’s Beijing bureau, as the government has refused the Qatari network’s request to send in another reporter to replace Ms Chan.
The case highlights growing conflict between Beijing officials and the international press, as well as a tightening of restrictions on foreign reporting in China.
