When Taiwanese investors last year began bringing money back to the island for the first time in two decades, it was hailed as a transformative moment for Taiwan's markets.
Analysts and bullish investors argued for a structural change as Taiwan improved ties with mainland China, and a flood of liquidity from both Taiwanese and foreign investors helped propel the stock market to one of Asia's best performances last year.
At the same time, however, Taiwan attracted a different type of capital inflow – speculative investors betting on a rise in the Taiwan dollar.
