Kim Jong-il, the ailing North Korean dictator, has chosen his mystery-shrouded youngest son to succeed him, according to US and South Korean officials.
A US official told the Financial Times that Mr Kim, who reportedly suffered a stroke and heart attack last year, had started preparing the country for his eventual replacement by Kim Jong-woon, his third son who is reportedly still in his 20s.
South Korean spies yesterday said the communist state's most powerful institutions had sworn loyalty to Jong-woon, suggesting that the formal anointment process had begun.
