Pope Francis will be buried on Saturday, the Vatican has said, with the funeral expected to draw many world leaders including US President Donald Trump.
The 88-year-old head of the Catholic Church died of a stroke on Monday, less than 24 hours after blessing and greeting the faithful in St Peter’s Square on Easter. He was in poor health after battling pneumonia in hospital for several weeks earlier this year.
The funeral will be held in St Peter’s Square on Saturday morning, but in a break with tradition and honouring his last wish, the pope’s body will be laid to rest in his favourite basilica in Rome instead of the Vatican.
